In order to live in or build a house you must hold the title of Yeoman. The Hut is the dwelling that you start with as a Commoner. Many different families can live in a worker's hut. Some unfortunate individuals have no where to live and these people are referred to as Beggars. The type of dwelling a person lives in is determined by their title. I notice that in large dynasty games 12 or more a few of the starting dynasties get smushed early.From the lowliest Workers Hut to the grandest Palatial Mansion, most people live in a dwelling of some description.
